OUR STORY
The Story of Long Doggers and Hatteras Red Lager
It was the Spring of 1987, and LJ, Al and Tony were gearing up for yet another epic adventure.
Their destination? Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, home to the best surfing on the Atlantic Coast. After finishing up their final exams at Florida Tech, the trio loaded their boards into LJ’s old VW bus and headed north. Twelve hours later, they arrived at the Cape pumped to paddle out, the famous black-and-white spiral of the Hatteras Lighthouse looming on the horizon.
But by the time the brick-red foundation of the coastal landmark appeared, they instantly knew their dreams had been crushed. The Atlantic was completely flat!
Tired from the ride, the guys set up tent at the Cape Point campground and headed out to a local spot for a few brews. Storm clouds began to roll in and by the time they got back to the site, they discovered their tent had blown away, forcing them to sleep in the VW! They thought their luck had finally turned when they awoke the next morning to the sound of crashing waves on the shoreline, but the surf was far too big and messy to even paddle out.
The guys checked out a nearby surf shop where a local told them to try Frisco Pier. The waves were sloppy, short and swarming with Makos. They were just about to throw in the towel and head back to Brevard when out of nowhere, the winds shifted. A powerful offshore breeze laid down the chop and the surf turned to glass. For three epic hours, the trio surfed clean overhead barrels along the Cape Hatteras Pier. They had some great laughs and talked about life and the future.
Little did they know that this trip and the memories made would serve as the foundation for the Long Doggers you’re sitting in today. And down the road, when it came time to name their first signature brew, they didn’t hesitate to label it “Hatteras Red Lager.”
We hope this story inspires you to reminisce about one of your own epic adventures.
